Soapbox to return to Eastbourne seafront in 2022
26th October 2021
The Seafront Soapbox Race is set to return to Eastbourne next year.
Following on from the hugely successful inaugural competition in September this year, Eastbourne Borough Council has confirmed the second event will take place on Sunday 25 September 2022.
The race encourages participants to build their own soapbox to race each other along the seafront.
It starts at Dukes Drive and finishes at Helen Gardens with the wacky creations whizzing around corners with the aim of staying in one piece by the time they complete the 350-metre course and reach the finish line.
Entries can be registered from Wednesday 1 December 2021 and there are cash prizes up for the fastest soapbox and the wackiest creation.
The 2021 fastest time winners were Eastbourne Gildredge Albino Squirrel Appreciation Society, whose members completed the course and both jumps in just 32 seconds.
Lewis Electrical took the prize for the best dressed team.
Eastbourne Borough Council’s lead member for tourism and culture Councillor Margaret Bannister said, “I am delighted to announce the Seafront Soapbox Race will return next year.
“This year’s event was a huge success with competitors putting their homemade soapboxes to the test. Hundreds of people lined the route and both competitors and spectators had a great time.
“The date has been set for next year and entries for individuals and businesses will be available from 1 December on a first come first serve basis.
“It’s sure to be a very popular event and I would advise people to register to avoid disappointment. It’s going to be bigger and better next year as more crazy contraptions take to the course for a fun-filled competition.”
