Eastbourne Pauses for Remembrance This November
24th October 2023
Those who lost their lives in wartime conflicts will be remembered alongside service personnel who continue to serve, at Remembrance events in Eastbourne during November.
Remembrance Day falls on Saturday 11 November and the annual Service of Remembrance will be held on Sunday 12 November.
The War Memorial in the town centre will be the backdrop for Sunday’s event, which is traditionally attended by hundreds of residents and visitors.
Representatives from the military, ex-service personnel, emergency services and other organisations will lead a parade through the town centre from Terminus Road to the War Memorial, while civic dignitaries – including the Mayor of Eastbourne and the town’s MP Caroline Ansell – lead a parade from Eastbourne Town Hall towards the War Memorial, where the service begins.
The thanksgiving service will be accompanied by musicians from Eastbourne Citadel Salvation Army Band and the Scottish Pipe Band, and include a two minutes’ silence at 11am and the official wreath laying.
The commemoration event concludes with the continuation of the parade by ex-military personnel past the War Memorial via South Street. To facilitate the event, several road closures will be put in place between 10am and 1pm.
Mayor of Eastbourne Councillor Candy Vaughan said, “The Remembrance Service in Eastbourne is always well attended as we all come together to honour those who serve and sacrifice their lives, and remember those who gave so much for so many and lost their lives in conflicts of the past.”
Earlier in November, the annual Remembrance Concert with Eastbourne Silver Band will take place at Our Lady of Ransom Church in Grange Road on Sunday 5 November at 2.30pm.
On Remembrance Day – Saturday 11 November – there will also be a service at 10.40am at the War Memorial Houses in Victoria Drive.
In addition, there will be a service at 3pm on Saturday 11 November at the Butts Brow Ruthless Memorial to honour the crew who lost their lives when the World War 2 USAAF Liberator bomber crashed into the downland above Willingdon in 1944.
