PMLD Accessible Viewing Area Hailed a Success at Eastbourne Airshow
21st August 2024
People with profound and multiple learning disabilities were able to enjoy many of the displays at Airbourne: Eastbourne International Airshow this year, thanks to a scheme run by local disability volunteers in conjunction with Eastbourne Borough Council.
Working with Chelsea Spence, an associate of Together Matters, a specific viewing area was provided throughout the four day show for around 20 families with sunshades, beds, Changing Places facilities and volunteer marshals to help those who needed assistance.
Families from Forward Facing - this year’s Airbourne People’s Charity - were also able to attend the viewing area with volunteers from the charity in attendance.
A diagnosis of a profound and multiple learning disability (PMLD) is used when someone has a severe learning disability and other disabilities that significantly affect their ability to communicate and be independent.
The viewing area was first introduced at last year’s Airbourne, providing a safe and comfortable viewing area for PMLD visitors and their families, helping some young people visit Airbourne for the first time.
As well as providing the perfect spot to view the flying displays, Ace and Aimee Air Bear treated guests to surprise visits bringing plenty of bear hugs, photo opportunities and fun.
Co-ordinator Chelsea Spence said “It’s great that we could offer this facility to the young people and their families. It has enabled them to experience Airbourne like never before.
“The feedback from families has been amazing and the opportunity for them to meet the Air Bears created some beautiful memories for the young people and their families. A big thank you to my team of volunteers who, without their help, it wouldn’t have been possible.”
Cllr Margaret Bannister, Eastbourne Borough Council’s Lead Member for Tourism, Leisure, Accessibility & Community Safety said “We were delighted to enable more guests with PMLD and their families to visit Airbourne once again, providing an incredible day out to remember. Our thanks go to Chelsea and the team of volunteers for their extensive support in making this happen.”
